S UNITED STATESA pharmaceutical company has been fined £25.3 million ($28.5 million) for illegally marketing Viagra, also known by its brand name Sildenafil, in the UK.
Thefine was announced by the Department for Digital Health, Health Insurance and Social Care (DRHD) and Healthcare England (HA scheme) on 23 May 2024, after a study of the internet pharmacy market revealed that, compared to the general population, internet pharmacy patients were 18% more likely to be diagnosed with erectile dysfunction (ED) and 58% more likely to suffer from other health conditions.
The study, carried out by the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacture Company UK Ltd, was designed to assess the extent that internet pharmacy patients are over-treated and under-treated. It found that internet pharmacy patients were over-treated and under-treated, with 83% of patients suffering from ED and 59% of patients suffering from other health conditions being treated with sildenafil.
HA scheme was launched on 1 March 2018 to inform UK consumers about the health risks associated with the internet pharmacy market. The scheme is designed to inform UK consumers about online pharmacies and their customers and their concerns.
The UK scheme is funded by The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and follows a similar study in the US in 2016 which found that patients with severe heart failure or a recent myocardial infarction (heart attack) had an 87% higher risk of dying compared to patients with normal heart function.
